Welcome to Ashore Wellness!

I’m Nick (Chien-Hung) Ko-Yang, a counsellor specialising in Narrative Therapy and a qualified social worker. With over 10 years of experience in the support role, I’ve dedicated my career to supporting folks from culturally diverse backgrounds, including those in the international student sector, aged care, and mental health.

As a migrant from Taiwan to Australia for over 24 years, I’m passionate about helping the culturally diverse community, especially those dealing with cultural adjustment challenges or unsure about where to find the support they need.

Being a gay man and a proud member of the LGBTIQ+ family, I get the unique challenges faced by culturally diverse LGBTIQ+ individuals and their families.

While I’m currently working in the mental health support sector, I’m keen to contribute further by providing counselling support to the community.

Profesionally Trained

Having graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Master of Social Work and completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling at UTAS, I am dedicated to continuous learning. I have been trained to incorporate the latest evidence-based therapeutic approaches into my sessions. These approaches include Narrative Therapy, Mindful CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness Practice.

LGBTIQ+ & PFLAG Friendly

As a proud member of the LGBTIQ+ community, I am deeply passionate about supporting the diverse community, including parents and other family members.

Seeking support can be challenging for parents and families, particularly those from diverse cultural or religious backgrounds. It may involve discussing how to manage interactions within their extended social circles. Counselling provides a valuable starting point to explore needs, discuss options, and receive the support you deserve.

Experienced

I’ve gained extensive experience in support, case management, and counselling across diverse organizations, including in-patient mental health, aged care, private practice, and higher education with international students.

Before entering the fields of social work and counselling, my diverse life experiences included work in the justice system, healthcare design, and the construction industry. I consider myself fortunate to have had these varied experiences, as they’ve equipped me with the ability to adapt to different worldviews and establish meaningful connections with my clients.

Person-Centred

I strive to offer unconditional positive regard and support to my clients through a person-centred approach.

Self-Determination

I believe in empowering my clients’ self-determination and tapping into their internal insights to facilitate recovery at a pace that suits each individual.

Exploration

I support my clients in utilising their own strengths and abilities. With newly learned skills, we explore possibilities in their life goals and recovery.
